Danelle Guthrie and Tom J. Buresh are principals of Guthrie + Buresh Architects, licensed architects and educators in practice since 1988. They have been based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2010, when they began academic appointments at UC Berkeley. Prior to that, they held academic appointments at the University of Michigan for nine years, and from 1988 to 2001 practiced in Los Angeles and taught at SCI-Arc. Their built and speculative work has been awarded, published and exhibited internationally.

Guthrie + Buresh’s portfolio includes a diverse range of building and program types including academic buildings and public works as well as commercial, residential and interior projects in Southern California, Michigan, the San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii. This work focuses on the observation, research, analysis and response to the unique parameters of each project. Their working method begins with a thorough understanding of a project’s context and critical aspects of the program together with rigorous spatial and material investigations. The results are inspired by natural landscapes, urban density, vernacular as well as monumental form making, space and material in light, and the mutability of human activity and experience. In all, their primary aim is to situate an architecture that is imaginative and disciplined while foregrounding the primary mission of architecture to enable and inspire.
