Hanalei Plantation Road
Kauai Hawaii
2020

Hanalei Plantation Road is a 3,000 sq.ft. residence in Princeville near Hanalei Bay on the island of Kauai. The project is designed for seasonal short-term use by the clients and their extended family, as well as a vacation rental. Situating the house into the sloping site, views to the ocean and mountains, orientation to sun and breeze, and organizing open and flexible spaces were primary objectives in the development of the project. Extensive design guidelines from the governing HOA provided additional restrictions. While acknowledging the extensive views to the north and south, the house forms an exterior courtyard with a pool and spa that in turn orients interior spaces. The stepped linear form mimics the sloping site, maximizing access to daylight and exterior spaces. In traditional tropical architecture, the roof is a dominant part of the form, defining space without delimiting enclosure. In response, the roof is designed as a gentle sloping surface with substantial overhangs at all exterior decks which provides ample shade and allows the natural breezes to cool the adjacent rooms.
